Wireless technology to make plugging-in a 'thing of the past' by 2025, says Go Ultra Low
Wireless technology and improvements to electric vehicle (EV) batteries will make plugging-in a 'thing of the past' by 2025, says Go Ultra Low.
The government-backed campaign, together with experts from the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), predict that the coming years will see developments in wireless charging technology that will enable EVs to be charged whilst parked at home or at the office.
As the Go Ultra Low website explains, wireless charging technology is developing at a rapid pace and is already utilised in certain sectors, such as the mobile phone market. Researchers are currently exploring the potential of wireless technology by conducting trials on buses and cars across the globe.Further enhancements to battery technologies will lead to an ever-increasing range for EVs. This will enable future drivers of EVs to drive for 'miles on end,' says Go Ultra Low, and they may not ever have to plug-in thanks to wireless technology.
TRL forecasts that the average range of an EV will double within the next five years, increasing to around 300 miles by 2025. By 2050, TRL says that 'refuelling as we know it will no longer be needed.'
Head of ultra-low emission vehicle technology at TRL, Denis Naberezhnykh, commented that
wireless charging will add convenience to the long list of reasons why it makes so much sense to drive an electric car.
Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low, added: "Electric cars are already suited to a huge proportion of the UK motoring population, offering the most cost effective, environmentally-friendly and easiest-to-drive option – it's tomorrow's technology today."
